Why are there so many brands? To the untrained eye, they may appear to be the same with the exception of the visual appearance. However, there are actually thousands of different ways that you can make a bass guitar.

These varieties in craftsmanship are actually welcomed by musicians because of the wide range of sounds that the different kinds of guitars can produce.

You can almost choose any single piece to a bass guitar, modify it in some way and the result will alter the range and/or tone of the sound. These alterations work in favor of many musicians and it is actually musicians that you can thank for such a wide variety.

Most of them used to be fairly similar to one another until musicians had special guitars custom made to pursue a sound that they were after. This is how 3, 5 and 6 string bass guitars were created, along with many of the other changes with guitars over the years.

Some brands only produce specific types of guitars, while others make a nice variety. Although Fender is not the original inventor of the electric bass, they are the first company to mass produce it, the Fender Precision Bass, in the early 1950s. They are always a reliable choice for a high quality guitar and they offer a decent variety as well.

There are also quite a few other very dependable brands like Gibson or Dean. If you are looking for a specialty bass for it’s look or a special sound, you may prefer brands like Hofner, G&L or Washburn.
