Almost anyone familiar with guitars has heard of the Ibanez brand name, but you may not be familiar with the actual name of the company that started the Ibanez brand, Hoshino Gakki. The Hoshino Gakki company started selling Spanish guitars under the Ibanez name in the 1930s. In the late 1950s they actually started producing their own guitars, although the company was really just producing knock-offs of European and American brands.
Finally in the 1980s, Ibanez started to manufacturer their own models using original designs. This is the true modern era of the Ibanez guitar brand that is loved by heavy metal and rock musicians worldwide. These feature wild body designs and innovative changes to classical American bass guitars.
The Ibanez brand of bass guitars is unique because of the design modifications that have been made to the classical guitar manufacturing process. The sometimes strange looking body shapes makes them visually appealing, but many of the other features help to achieve the sound that their guitars are known for. High output electrical instruments, unique pickup configurations and full 2-octave fretboards are just a few of these features that give Ibanez bass guitars an amazing sound that won’t be found from other companies.
In recent years, Ibanez has been able to market a number of decent series of bass guitars that are very affordable and still offer the unique features that can compete with rival Japanese guitar manufacturer ESP. One of the more popular modern models is the Soundgear Series and it’s low-cost cousin, the GSR Series.
